What is AS2:
AS2 (Applicability Standard 2) is an EDI standard created to ensure an appropriate level of security for data transmitted over the internet. Although it was specifically developed for EDI, it can be used to transfer any type of file, including XML.
Benefits:
AS2 allows direct transmission between trading partners, eliminating the need for an expensive Value Added Network (VAN) operator to handle data exchange.
How It Works:
EDIFACT AS2 services enable the secure transmission of data over the internet using the HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) or the more secure HTTPS version. Security is ensured through encryption and digital signatures using a format called S/MIME (Secure Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extension) and MDN (Message Disposition Notifications).
MDNs contain information about the message transmission status. This guarantees non-repudiation, ensuring that the recipient cannot deny having received the message.
To begin data exchange, trading partners share certain information (public key, AS2 ID, AS2 URL, and ports used).
The AS2 software listens for incoming messages and automatically handles outgoing messages.
Before being sent, messages are encrypted with the recipient’s public key and signed with the sender’s private key.
Upon receipt, the trading partner uses their private key to decrypt the message, and an MDN receipt is automatically generated and sent as confirmation.
This MDN is signed with the trading partner’s private key and encrypted using your public key.
