Log Management

Log files consist of chronological and sequential records related to operations performed on a computing device, whether it be a server, a PC, or a network device such as a firewall. Devices typically manage logs, but almost always store them in a temporary and therefore non-permanent manner. Log management activities, on the other hand, allow for the permanent storage of logs, but always in accordance with the defined retention policy, so they can be reused later if necessary.

Logs are very important for adequate security management of systems. Thanks to log management, it is possible to monitor activities such as successful and unsuccessful system access attempts, or internet browsing activities.

Data Protection needs can thus be ensured also with proper management of log files.

Storing log files is considered good practice, even by the Data Protection Authority, to demonstrate correct behavior, particularly in terms of accountability. In numerous rulings, the Data Protection Authority has deemed it sufficient for a company to demonstrate a certain action through the use of a log file.

A prime example is ruling no. 1378152 of December 20, 2006. In this case, a user had formally objected to receiving an email he considered inappropriate. The company defended itself by producing a log file as evidence, which unequivocally demonstrated that the user had autonomously registered for a newsletter, from which the disputed email was sent.

Real Comm offers complete solutions for the management of log files, including:

  • System administrator access logs
  • Internet browsing logs
  • Logs of attempted unauthorized access to a computer system
  • Logs of any other nature

The proposed solutions are applicable to Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and MacOS systems, as well as network devices such as firewalls, routers, access points, and network switches.
